Adult Acne Can Be Devastating

By Karen Miseneer

Almost everyone in the world has been afflicted with the most common skin condition known as acne. Many of us have acne issues in high school, but we can continue to have the problem well into adulthood. Caused by Propionibacterium acne and precipitated by certain risk factors, this condition is notorious for flaring up recurrently. There are many methods that will help to reduce acne, and we will look at some of the more simple methods, and other options that can be chosen.

What is the cause of adult acne?

Sebaceous glands are contained within the skin that secrete sebum, which is a thick and oily material. Sebum can block the pores of the skin and allow bacteria to grow within them. This bacterial growth results in inflammation and the formation of acne. For women, more acne can occur during menopause or pregnancy, and in men, it can occur as testosterone is produced.

The treatment of acne for adults

Many techniques have been devised to treat adults afflicted with acne. Some treatments will work better for some people, and other types will not. To stop the spread and continuation of acne on the skin, there are some easy ways to begin the process.

1. Over-the-counter cleansing products are one solution that many people try, purchasing these in many retail markets. Sebum secretions are cleaned out, opening the pores.

2. Topical creams - These days, creams that contain benzoyl peroxide are used to treat adult acne. These can reduce the occurrence of acne in good time, and get the redness under control. In some patients however, the skin can get dried out a bit too much and this can cause itching and flaking skin.

3. Some people benefit from treatments of antibiotics that a dermatologist or physician may prescribe. Clindamycin is an example of a quality topical antibiotic cream that has been effective for many. There are some treatments that take more time such as tetracycline, taken as an oral medication. People need to know that tetracycline treatments can stain teeth as a side effect, this should be taken into consideration.

Some effective and simple home remedies

The basic act of washing the skin with warm water and soap is an age old method to reduce acne. Hot water is not recommended as it can dry the skin out to much. Avoid rubbing the skin with a towel when drying the face after washing it as this can cause trauma to it and can precipitate acne. Everyone is different, so pay attention to what factors may be contributing to your particular acne problems.

Treatments for more serious acne

In past years, dermatology research has provided some newer methods that help people significantly who suffer from adult acne. There are lots of treatment processes, including blue light therapy, laser therapy, or chemical peels. Before undergoing any such treatment, the dermatologist will assess whether or not this will be of any benefit in the first place and will initially tryout the above measures first.

Synopsis

Many people find themselves embarrassed and aggravated by adult acne. The basic ways to treat acne work for some, but not for all. A dermatologist can provide many helpful techniques to someone who has issues with adult acne, go see one as soon as you can.
